Dr. Mark J. Lewis will open the 2009 Passport to the Future Teacher Workshop with his unique perspective on the importance of good educators and the impact on the Aerospace industry.

Dr. Lewis a Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland, and the incoming President of AIAA. Formerly he served as the Chief Scientist of the U.S. Air Force.

Dr. Lewis received his professional education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Lewis is the author of more than 275 technical publications and adviser to more than 60 graduate students. He is active in national and international professional societies, with responsibilities for both research and educational policy and support.

Spend an intimate evening with former US Astronaut Bruce McCandless as he inspires you with the wonders of spaceflight from his unique perspective. A veteran of two space flights, McCandless has logged over 312 hours in space, including 4 hours of MMU flight time. He flew as a mission specialist on STS-41B (February 3-11, 1984) and STS-31 (April 24-29, 1990).

Merrie Scott is manager for industry partnerships at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the world’s forum for aerospace leadership. As such, she is responsible for maintaining and developing policies and procedures related to corporate membership, strategic alliances, and various industry partnership programs and events that support the Institute. In this role she establishes active participation with the aerospace industry and aeronautics and space societies to host, co-host, organize, and conduct high quality activities of mutual benefit that serve to enhance the aerospace profession. She has more than 20 years of experience with Institute and held various positions that included organizing an industry-wide campaign to celebrate the centennial of powered flight, administering professional and student membership programs and events, honors and awards activities and strategic planning and development.

Scott is also currently serving a one-year term as president of Women in Aerospace, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding women’s opportunities for leadership and to increasing their visibility within the aerospace community. In this role, Scott is responsible for working with a group of elected officers and the Board of Directors to ensure all operations and activities for the organization are maintained and that new initiatives are planned in coordination with our strategic goals.

Scott has a BA in Public Administration from Shippensburg University in PA.
